Chance to renew link with ex-Caley Thistle coach was a ‘main factor’, says striker Shaun Morrison after Strathspey Thistle move

Strathspey Thistle have moved to add proven Highland League experience — and goals — to their side by snapping up energetic forward Shaun Morrison on a multi-year deal.

The 21-year-old, who spent the latter half of last season at Rothes after three years with Forres Mechanics, is the newest addition to Ryan Esson’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

A native of Stornoway, Morrison grew up in Inverness and came through the youth ranks at Clachnacuddin before joining Inverness Caledonian Thistle at 16.

There, he first worked under current Jags boss Esson — a link that helped shape his decision to join the Grantown side five years later

"Ryan was one of the main factors," Morrison said. “He completely changed the player I was, going from Clachnacuddin to Caley.

“He was a huge help to me when it came to reaching the sharpness and fitness levels needed to step up the next level.”

After leaving Caley Thistle in January 2022, Morrison signed for Forres and quickly established himself as a regular fixture in the Can Cans’ forward line.

Adjusting quickly, he missed just five league games over the next two seasons, netting 17 goals for the club.

"It was good growing into adult football at a young age," he reflected. “My three years at Forres were good, and I have nothing but nice things to say about the club, and the supporters.

“The group of boys were class and [manager Steven Macdonald] was there the whole time developing me as a better player.”

Morrison missed only a handful of matches over three seasons, though a knee issue in pre-season last summer side-lined the striker for eight weeks.

A loan move to Rothes followed midway through the campaign and Morrison responded well, scoring four goals in 10 appearances despite Rothes enduring a difficult season.

The move served as an opportunity for some “regular game time” and a chance to get “back amongst the goals,” he said.

Looking ahead to next season, he believes his move to Strathspey, which sees him sign a three-year contract, represents a fresh chance to show what he can do in a side looking to climb the Highland League table.

With competition for places up front expected to be strong, Morrison is embracing the challenge ahead.

“It’s always good to have competition — it makes boys work harder,” he added. "I just want to show what I know I can offer."

Manager Ryan Esson said Morrison is a player he has followed closely since their time together at Inverness.

“Great to get Shaun over the line,” Esson said. “He’s still young but has good experience at this level.

“He finished last season scoring goals and we’re hoping he can bring that form into the new season.

“We’ve got good competition up front and Shaun will add to that.”
