FORRES Mechanics club legend Charlie Brown has left the Mosset Park club to become manager at Highland League rivals Strathspey Thistle.

Brown was a prolific striker for Cans during his own playing career, as well as a spell at Buckie Thistle. He has worked as a first team coach at Forres under current boss Charlie Rowley since retiring from playing.

Rowley said he was sorry to see a member of his coaching staff depart the scene but understood the lure of his first Highland League management job was too strong for Brown to resist.

“He’s had a long tenure at the club and having spoken to him closely he felt it was an opportunity he found difficult to turn down,” Rowley said.

“He goes with our best wishes, and we would never stop anybody from trying to progress.”

Brown replaces Gordon Nicolson, who quit as boss at the Grantown club last month.

Forres had appointed former centre back Nathan Sharp as joint-assistant manager along with current incumbent Craig Ewen. Manager Rowley has committed to leaving the Mechanics managerial position at the end of his current contract in 2023.

Rowley added: “Charlie understood the situation at Forres and thought it might be a bit more difficult to get the top job here. “There’s maybe not many opportunities you can get to be a manager in the Highland League so he rightly took the opportunity up.

“We wish him all the best, obviously not against us. But if there’s anything we can do in any way, shape or form that obviously doesn’t hinder us, we will certainly do that.”
