A woman threw her engagement ring down a drain after a row with her partner.

Sean Hartley, (25), formerly of Stewart Court, Culloden appeared from custody and admitted the previous day in Keppoch Road assaulting his partner and striking her on the head.

Kelly Mitchell, depute fiscal, told Inverness Sheriff Court today that police were called at 6.15pm after they received a report of an incident.

She said Hartley struck the woman on the left side of the face.

Iain Innes, solicitor said Hartley had now been offered accommodation with family in Forres.

"I’ve no doubt if both parties wish the relationship to persist it will persist," he said.

Mr Innes told Sheriff Sutherland the incident happened outside the lady’s father’s home and during the course of this argument she took of the ring and threw it onto the ground.

"He had a stick and was trying to retrieve it from a drain. She said: ‘I’m fed up. I’m going down to the pub,’."

Mr Innes said Hartley tried to restrain her and she was slapped.

He said Hartley had acquired employment with a firm from Forres providing slabbing and fencing service and the work was principally away from Inverness.

He was fined £400.
