Woman killed in Cairngorms after being hit by a rock

A woman has died on the Cairgorm moutain range this afternoon, despite rescue attempts.

Police Scotland received a report of a casualty near the Pigme Ridge on Coire an t-Sneachda at about 2.32pm today.

Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team and Royal Navy Sea King Helicopter Rescue 177 attended the scene, but the woman could not be resuscitated.

It is understood that the woman was hit by a boulder as she and a companion walked along the Pygmy Ridge.

The police say the woman will not be identified until all next of kin have been informed. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
