Winter weather slows up Dalwhinnie roadworks
The £100,000 road maintenance improvements on the A889 at Cathar Mor in Badenoch have been extended by two days.
The project involves resurfacing 600m of the trunk road which has begun to deteriorate following the recent winter weather which has seen the freeze and thaw cycle causing parts of the road surface to break up.
The works will help create a safer and smoother carriageway for road users, say Bear Scotland.
For the safety of both road workers and motorists, the A889 will be closed to all traffic between Dalwhinnie and Cat Lodge between 7am and 7pm throughout the project.
BEAR Scotland said today (Friday, February 9) that the extension was necessary due to cold temperatures and inclement weather affecting operations at the start of this week.
"The works will now take place on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 next week," said Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative.
To avoid disrupting weekend traffic, no works will take place on Saturday 10 or Sunday 11.
Cold temperatures can have a serious impact on the quality of the materials used when applying the new road surface, affecting the durability of the road.
Traffic management will remain the same as before, the spokesperson added, with a road closure in place for safety between 7am and 7pm each day.
Traffic will be diverted via the A86 and A9.
Emergency vehicles will be able to pass through the works at all times.
"We do everything possible to minimise disruption when work is taking place but, on this occasion, we have to replace the full road width and a full closure is required to do that," Mr Ross explained.
"We ask drivers to pay attention to the traffic measures and temporary signage in place during the work and to plan ahead as much as possible before starting their journey.
"We also recommended drivers check the Traffic Scotland website and twitter account for the latest travel information."
