WiFi hotspots to be created on Cairngorm slopes

A high-speed wireless communications link from Aviemore to CairnGorm Mountain — a distance of over seven miles — has been completed.

Wireless technology experts, Rapier Systems, provided the secure installation, which is claimed to be immune to the extremes of weather that are common on the mountain.

More businesses in and around the Cairngorms will be connected during the a second phase of the work.

A final stage will see public and corporate Wi-Fi for all buildings at the ski resort, including those at the top and bottom of the funicular railway, and ‘hot spots’ in and around the ski lift areas.

"This increase in access and capacity is a major boost for the Cairngorms, both for visitors and local businesses alike," said Paul Nixon, customer services manager at CairnGorm Mountain Ltd.

Richard Watson, managing director at Rapier, said: "This project demonstrates perfectly the advantages that a wireless solution enjoys over traditional, fixed line networks; in an environment like the Cairngorms it would be highly impractical and significantly more expensive to achieve the same result with fixed lines."
