The cycle-friendly capital of Badenoch is gearing up to deliver its best Bikefest yet on Saturday (June 13).

The free event, which gets under way at 11am in the Ardvonie Park, is being staged by “Cycle Friendly Kingussie”, a pilot Cycling Scotland initiative being delivered by the town’s Community Development Company.

Headlining the extravaganza is The Clan, Scotland’s cycle stunt team, who will put on three gravity-defying displays of the most extreme and skilful cycling on their custom-built rig.

Fun for the entire family is being promised, with ride-outs on local trails and road led by Cycle Friendly Kingussie’s ride leaders, children’s races and prizes for all ages and a skills corner including ramps, see-saws, drop offs and a limbo bar with coaching from Cyclewild Scotland.

“Our very own Dr Bike from Bothy Bikes will be there to do a safety check for anybody who has entered the Bikeathon on Sunday,” said Bob Kinnaird, of Cycle Friendly Kingussie. “Cyclists should just being their race number and bike along for a free safety check. Highlife Scotland will also be running their ever-popular spin challenge.

“Those starting out on their cycling adventure can come along and try one of our balance bikes and for those who would like a little motorised assistance we will have electric bikes for you to try.

“As well as the amazing Clan Stunt Team we have fun races for kids of all ages, coaching skills, ride outs and much more” Bob continued. “We are delighted to have organised the event this year with the help of a whole range of volunteers and from our local Kingussie High School and Active Schools co-ordinators - the purpose of the event is to get as many folk as we can, locals and visitors, engaged in cycling and we are thrilled that that we have been able to put on a free entry festival with all events and activities free too.”

Ollie Bray, head teacher at Kingussie High added: “The school are absolutely delighted to be involved in this fantastic community event, now a firm high point in the Kingussie festival programme. We will have a team of pupils volunteering; putting up and taking down marquees and helping out on the day. It promises to be a great day and anyone who doesn’t have a bike of their own can come along and try one of ours.”

The event is free entry, open to all, and runs from 11am to 4pm at Ardvonie Park, Kingussie. www.bikefestscotland.co.uk has all the details.
