WATCH: Wet weather does not dampen enthusiasm for return of fitness classes in strath

It has been a wet and cold return to High Life Highland fitness classes in the strath but that has not dampened the enthusiasm of those taking part.

A limited number of classes are being held for the first time since the three local sports centres -closed down for the Christmas holidays.

The second Covid lockdown was then announced and kicked in on Boxing Day leaving people to follow their own regimes or take a break.

The sports and leisure venues at Kingussie, Aviemore and Grantown remain closed but recent relaxations mean that groups of up to 15 people can now exercise outdoors with a coach or instructor.

The first Fit Plus and circuits hour long classes took place on Tuesday in Aviemore with a full uptake despite the weather.

The participants were greeted by high winds and driving rain but stuck at it.

One circuits regular said: "It is great to be back and to see some familiar faces after all these months.

"I find taking part in a class is more motivating when it comes to keeping fit and the instructors are excellent.

"The only bit I didn't particularly enjoy was doing sit ups on the wet pitch!"

Fraser Tulloch, High Life Highland facility manager, is delighted by the otherwise smooth return of the classes.

He said “Lockdown has been a challenging time for many in our communities, particularly throughout the winter months.

"High Life Highland is delighted to be welcoming our customers and members back to our locations with the offer of outdoor fitness classes in a Covid-safe environment in line with Scottish Government guidelines.

"These classes offer not only physical benefits but also a huge benefit to the mental health of those taking part too.”

Non-contact sports and fitness classes can take place outdoors with up to 15 people were able to resume from March 12 in Scotland.

Gyms are set to reopen after lockdown is eased further from April 26.

Classes have to be booked in advance via HLH's website.
