WATCH: SARLOC to the rescue for lost Cairngorm walkers

The Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team was spared many man hours last night by being able to guide two lost walkers to safety off the plateau using mobile phone technology.

The team was able to use SARLOC Rescue tech to direct the pair back to the Cairngorm ski area.

The technology was developed by Russ Hore, a former mountain rescue team member in the UK. It is used by search and rescue teams worldwide to assist locating lost people.

A CMRT spokesperson said: "Team members managed to direct the walkers back to the ski area over the phone where they were picked up in our ATV.

"Many man hours were saved using this great GPS location technology."

A spokesperson for SARLOC Rescue posted: "The rescue team asked the lost persons to use SARLOC technology every few minutes to effectively track them and remotely walk them off the hill."

There are many apps for smartphones which show the phone's location but these rely on the lost person having the app installed before they get lost.

SARLOC uses the web browser installed on the smartphone to interrogate the GPS and locate the person normally to within a few metres.

There is no need to instal a separate app.

The CMRT relies on public donations to fund their work. For more details or to contribute click here
