FLOOD warnings were issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) as Badenoch again lived up to its name as "the drowned land".

The stretch of the River Spey from the Spey Dam to downriver from Kincraig was subject to SEPA notices from 2.40pm on Tuesday.

SEPA said: "A combination of rainfall and snow-melt have caused river levels to rise. The rain is beginning to ease and river levels are expected to peak Tuesday evening.

"Agricultural land is at risk of flooding along the Spey Valley. This is a warning to move any livestock. Low-lying properties, access routes (B9152 and B970) and the railway line are also at risk of flooding.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property."

Warnings about the railway line were borne out as the rail service between Inverness and Perth was suspended.

Customers received notices about cancellations including the 8.31am service Inverness to Kings Cross London with passengers having to be shuttled to Perth by bus.

Operator LNER informed those travelling: "We're sorry to let you know that the train you're booked to travel on on Wednesday, December 19 will be starting at Perth instead of Inverness. This is due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Inverness and Perth.

"Road transport has been arranged for all customers affected, please speak to station staff who will be able to assist you.

"We are really sorry for the inconvenience this will cause you."

Services were resumed later in the morning.
