Drivers are being warned to expect delays as a £2 million programme of road surface improvements on the A9 between Perth-shire and Ross-shire are now underway.

Temporary traffic lights and a 10mph convoy system will be in operation whilst works are undertaken on various stretches of the trunk road over the next six months.

The investment, by Transport Scotland, will see six sections of the A9, between Ballinluig and Tore Roundabout totalling four kilometres, resurfaced.

It says the programme will fix defects and improve the overall quality and safety of the road surface for drivers.

It got under way on Monday with resurfacing on the 750 metres section of road between Dalraddy and Lynwilg scheduled last for another 10 days. These works will be carried out between the hours of 7am and 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Eddie Ross, Operating Company Representative in the North West for BEAR Scotland said: "The A9 is a major strategic trunk road that is used by thousands of road users on a daily basis. This significant investment by Transport Scotland allows this key element of Scotland’s road infrastructure to continue to operate safely and effectively for years to come, providing vital access for people to and from the North of Scotland.

"We would urge drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journey."

The six A9 schemes anticipated over the next six months are:

• Dalraddy to Lynwilg (Works started on Monday)

• South of River Nairn southbound (Late November)

• Munlochy sounthbound (December)

• Trinafour southbound (February)

• Drumochter southbound (February/March)

• Ballinluig northbound (March/April)

All works will be undertaken by Breedon Aggregates on behalf of BEAR Scotland.
