From Grantown to the world: cellist's 'live' album earns its votes
"Worth missing Bake Off for!"
What greater review can a musician earn?
It's what celebrated Grantown-based cellist Su-a Lee merited tonight after sharing her album "Dialogues" with the world via a 'live' playing on Bandcamp.
The South Korean-born virtuoso, renowned for her wide-ranging collaborations across classical music, contemporary music, Scottish traditional music and jazz, released her album in December last year to wide-ranging acclaim.
Now it is in line for top honours from the Scots traditional world.
"I’m excited to say that public voting is now open for the last stage of the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards," she told the Strathy this week, "and my album is included in the 'Album of the Year' category."
The entire work, featuring breath-taking collaborations with some of Scotland's finest performers, has just finished playing on Bandcamp and there is no doubt that the votes will be flying in, judging by the stream of approval from all corners.
There are, in all, 15 duos with: fiddle players Donald Grant, Duncan Chisholm, Jenna Reid, Patsy Reid and Pekka Kuusisto; pianists Donald Shaw and James Ross; flautist Hamish Napier; harper Maeve Gilchrist; bandoneonist Carel Kraayenhof; accordionist Phil Cunningham; Scots singer Karine Polwart; Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis; and fellow cellist Natalie Haas.
Voting continues until midnight on Sunday, November 19.
"It's the perfect opportunity to show your appreciation for all those people and organisations that make up our vibrant Scottish traditional music community," she confirmed.
The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, December 2 in The Caird Hall, Dundee with many acts performing including Duncan Chisholm – who features on Dialogues and will perform with Strathspey's finest cellist on the night – Peatbog Faeries, Karine Polwart – who also performs on Dialogues – Dave Milligan, Mànran and many more.
