Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Covid-19 virus advice leaves huge question hanging over the planned programme for Eden Court; the Inverness theatre has spoken of 'unprecedented' and 'deeply worrying' times as coronavirus impact increases
UNCERTAINTY surrounds one of the jewels in the Highland cultural crown tonight - after official coronavirus advice left a massive question mark hanging over Eden Court's day-to-day functions.
The popular Inverness theatre has warned of "unprecedented" and "deeply worrying" times ahead for "all of us at Eden Court" after Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave a public briefing tonight in which he encouraged people to avoid bars, clubs and theatres as Westminster stepped up its response to Covid-19.
Responding to the news, Eden Court said the advice left it "looking increasingly likely" that the theatre's ability to bring people together may soon "not be possible" in the short-term.
A spokesman for the theatre said: "These are unprecedented times and deeply worrying for all of us at Eden Court.
"The Prime Minister’s update this afternoon included a request to the public to avoid all non-essential contact.
"We’re in the business of bringing people together. It’s looking increasingly likely that our ability to do that, in the short-term, may not be possible.
"Before we take a firm decision about our ability to deliver our programme we need time to consult with our funders and other stakeholders. We are doing that urgently and aim to make a further update tomorrow (Tuesday).
The statement came as quarterly brochures for Eden Court's upcoming programme were dropping through Highland letterboxes - leaving it uncertain how much of the highlighted activities might have to be postponed or scrapped.
