It was a triumphant return to MacDonalds Aviemore Resort auditorium last night for The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines Scotland.

Directed by Captain Ann Miller and WO2 Stuart Fothergill, the band performed a hugely entertaining programme which took the rapt audience from Orpheus in the Underworld (minus the garters and frilly knickers of the Can-Can) to Morricone’s La Califfa to Sinatra, and from Star Wars to German circuses, along with their stirring military fare.

A moving address on CRY, ‘Cardiac Risk in the Young’, came from Ann Mackintosh, mother of local shinty star Calum who died so suddenly in November 2023.

Her story was told just hours before this weekend’s vital screening sessions at Carrbridge Village Hall, paid for by the Calum Mackintosh Memorial Fund, which will check out more than 200 locals aged between 14 and 35 to detect any potential heart issues.

The audience last night heard that an average of 12 young people die every week in the UK due to conditions which in as many as 80 per cent of cases showed no prior symptoms.

DRUM ROLL! The Corps of Drums astonished the audience with their dexterity.

The evening was hosted by the Rotary Club of Spey Valley and everyone was welcomed by event co-ordinator Major (rtd) Stewart McNeish, who explained that funds from the night would also go towards the Royal Marines Charity.

CLOWNING AROUND: Cpl Richard Sharp and LCpl Harry Page's xylophone mastery transported the audience to Germany with Zirkus Reitz (Peter/Woodfield).

The night included a raffle and a silent auction and left music lovers hoping for a third such show next year.
