Tributes have been paid to a brave 13-year-old Carrbridge boy who fought a terminal brain cancer to the end.

Robert "Bobo" Munro died last Thursday (June 15) in Raigmore Hospital after an 18-month battle with the rare condition DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma).

His primary head teacher, Clare Lake, at Carrbridge said: "It’s so sad. Bobo was a wonderful boy, always so active, always to be seen either playing on the football pitch or out with his beloved motocross. He came here at P3 after his initial education at Strathdearn and by the time he moved on to Grantown Grammar School he had so many friends.

"Bobo will be very much missed by so many people."

At Grantown Grammar, head teacher Claire McGonigal told the Strathy: "Bobo, or as we knew him, Robert, was very clear when he was introduced to me that he wanted to be known as Robert at secondary. He was a lovely young man, always surrounded by his friends who were very protective of him. But his group were also always laughing.

"He didn’t manage to attend school for many days after October but enjoyed the time he was here. He was keen to take part in every activity including canoeing, hill walks and, of course, the welcome disco.

"At the welcome disco he was at the centre of the ‘mosh pit’ where he and his friends had a great night. He was a keen and talented footballer and many pupils remember their primary school games against Carr Bridge where Robert was a key figure in Carr Bridge’s victory. "His team was Celtic but he was a true sportsman and always appreciated good play.

"We always hoped that he would be able to re-join our school community and we all feel his loss greatly.

"At school we will be planting a tree and making a bench so pupils can take a moment to reflect on his memory and his courage.

"He will always be an inspiration to our pupils to face their problems with a smile and determination in honour of his bravery and strength in the face of his illness."

A funeral service is to be held at the family home, Inverlaidnan, at noon on Saturday (June 24) to which all friends are invited.

Full story out now in today’s Strathspey and Badenoch Herald.
