This weekend will see the veil lifted on a major new business development in Kingussie.

After two years and more than £500,000 devoted to it, local company Toncam Flooring and Interiors’ new showroom will throw open its doors on Sunday for the first time to the public and a wide range of potential customers - from local communities and those well beyond.

“We acquired the site right beside the railway line for a very good reason,” explained the company’s Evan Menzies.

“The accessibility our customers will have to what we’re selling and the services we’re offering.

“As a business we have always offered small interiors and been specialists in the cleaning, restoration and supply and fit of all floor coverings, but the shop on the high street always restricted us, as we were continually battling space.

“When the opportunity came we purchased Unit 2B by the train station as this was our opportunity to really expand on the interior side of the business.”

The wraps were on as the Strathy was shown into the showroom but Mr Menzies explained all would be revealed from 10am on Sunday - precisely what range of furnishings and floorings would initially on offer from the hugely expanded firm.

We see this as the final expansion for the business as it will allow everything to be under one roof

And there would be refreshments available to everyone who came along.

“When assessing the plans and what else we could offer in order to create a destination location for people to travel to it made sense to try and incorporate a cafe - hence the new company - Railway Cafe.

“Although this will cater for the local area the aim here was really to try and give people from the bigger communities, Aviemore, Pitlochry, Inverness and Perth a real reason to travel and visit us here in Kingussie.

“Equally, being situated at the train station can even mean jumping on a train and visiting us.”

Setting up the new cafe and renovating the showroom for Toncam has cost to date over £500,000 - and is a substantial commitment to the future.

“We see this as the final expansion for the business as it will allow everything to be under one roof.”

Railway Cafe will be run by Leonie Kennedy, her cafe company creating three full time jobs and two part-timers.

“At Toncam will also be looking to employ another two full -time members of staff,” said Mr Menzies, “so in all we have created five full time jobs through the expansion.

The official opening on Sunday morning will see a ribbon cut the ribbon and there will be drinks and nibbles.
