Thunderstorms and heavy and persistent rainfall could bring up to 75mm of rain "in just a few hours" in parts of the Highlands and Moray this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning ahead of the potential deluge which comes into force at 4pm on Saturday and will remain in place until midday on Sunday.

A spokesperson the for Met Office said: "Areas of heavy rain with isolated thunderstorms are expected to arrive from the south during Saturday afternoon, becoming persistent in places and leading to some large totals building up, particularly on southeast facing areas of high ground.

"Many places are likely to see 20-30 mm, but some locations could see 50-75 mm in just a few hours."

The warning area covers most of eastern and central mainland Scotland and extends as far north as Tomatin, Grantown-on-Spey, Glenlivet and Cabrach.

The Met Office spokesperson said: "Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

"Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

"People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

"Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."
