The heat is on for Aviemore firefighters
Aviemore firefighter Jamie Stewart is at it again – putting himself through torture for another good cause.
Back in 2017 he climbed Everest to raise funds for defibrillators in Badenoch and Strathspey – or the equivalent of it, running up and down the height of the Four Seasons Hotel in full firefighting kit (he wore the Strathy out from our seat in the elevator).
Now Jamie (36) is going to conquer the Lairig Ghru, which he has walked before, with work colleagues from Hydrasun in Aviemore, but this time he will be donning full kit for the journey.
For this trip, though, he assured us: “I’m not doing it alone. I’m with a team of fearless colleagues as we raise funds for Macmillan Nurses.
“Personally I’m doing it for the fantastic work they do for my grandmother Janet Smith, as she moves to radiotherapy treatment after finishing her chemo, and for friends whose children have had a similar experience.
“All the team have their reasons, with either friends or family who have been involved with the same kind of fight. |Let’s just say we’re all highly motivated.”
Jamie will join Stuart Boon, James Monaghan, Martin Amos and Kyle McRobert for the epic challenge of walking from the Linn of Dee car park at Braemar, through the Lairig Ghru Pass and all the way on to Aviemore fire station on August 26.
“It’s approximately 27 miles and no matter what the weather conditions we will be completing it in full firefighting kit, of tunic, leggings, helmet, boots and gloves.”
“We’re getting good support already,” he told the Strathy. “It means a lot to us as we all have family and friends who have either used or are currently using the invaluable services Macmillan provide.
“Macmillan gives people with cancer everything they’ve got. If you’re diagnosed, your worries are Macmillan’s worries. Macmillan’s doing whatever it takes. But without your help, Macmillan can’t support everyone who needs them.”
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and secure, he said.
“JustGiving never sell your details or send unwanted emails.
“Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs.
“I know how thankful my granny is for them so the least I can do is raise a few hundred pounds for Macmillan Nurses and the brilliant job they do.”
