Grantown turned out today to pay its respects to those who had paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom they had enjoyed for the last eight decades.

The 80th celebration of Victory in Europe featured a programme of readings and a two-minute silence outside the clubrooms of the Royal British Legion (Scotland) Strathspey branch.

Branch chairman Ewan MacGregor welcomed everyone, with the assistance of Winston Churchill’s famous recorded VE Day announcement.

Words of Synonym from the Reverend Elizabeth MacLean were followed by Mr MacGregor’s prononcement of the Kohima Epitaph Poem, before a piper played the Flowers of the Forest as the standards were respectfully lowered.

Following the national silence and the raising of the standards Jimmy Greig replaced the poppy wreath under the Homecoming Soldier.

A moving recitation of Angelow Wybrow’s VE Day poem was given by six different readers.

Words of Service and Prayer ensued from Rev MacLean and Mr MacGregor brought proceedings to a close.
