Temperatures plunged to -20C overnight in the Carrbridge area – the lowest recorded in the strath for nearly two years.

The Highlands and Islands Weatherman – Lee Schofield – told the Strathy that the forecast for the region is for it to stay cold for the rest of the week with further hard frost and some snow showers.

Aviemore, Grantown and Kingussie did not see the mercury plunge quite so low as rural areas in Strathspey recording -14C, -15C and -13C respectively but Boat of Garten did fall to -17C.

The Carrbridge-based weather expert said: "These are the lowest values since February 2021 when we saw -21C just outside Carrbridge.

"There are signs of a change to milder air from the south-west later Sunday but this brings with it a threat of freezing rain as the temperature at the surface will be lower than the air mass above."

The overnight lows around the strath recorded by Mr Schofield's mini weather stations were: Shillochan (Carrbridge) -20C; Achnahannet (Carrbridge) -18C; Easter Gallovie (Carrbridge) -18C; Duthil -17C; Boat of Garten -17C; Carrbridge village -15C; Grantown -15C; Nethy Bridge -15C; Glenmore -15C; Kincraig -15C; Aviemore -14C and Kingussie -13C
