Highland councillors will consider a proposal to lower the pass-mark for region-wide “knowledge” for taxi drivers in Highland.

The pass mark for Highland-wide knowledge and, separately, drivers’ local areas is currently 85 per cent.

Firms have argued that satnav technology is sufficiently reliable as an aid to the job.

Pass rate targets could drop by 10 per cent, if councillors are convinced.

The issue surfaced during recent discussions between operators and council representatives in Inverness, Dingwall, Wick and Fort William.

Licensing committee members will consider the issue next Tuesday..
