A well-known Highland bakery firm is to move into Grantown’s High Street at the end of next month.

Nairn-based Ashers Bakeries is to move into the premises formerly occupied by Smarty Art, creating five new jobs.

Director Alister Asher told the Strathy: "We have been looking at Grantown for a few years and there have been a few opportunities that have come and gone but this site has a great location.

"We are delighted to be coming to Grantown’s High Street.

"We have 12 shops and this will be our 13th – lucky 13 but including our bakery, we have 14 locations!"

"We have been in Aviemore since 1998 and the shop there is on a long lease so we come to the area every day already to make deliveries.

"Our Grantown outlet will be a relatively small baker’s shop selling our usual range of savories, sandwiches, breads and cakes."

The new positions are expected to be part-time and the shop will be re-fitted before it opens towards the end of June.

Mr Asher said: "This should not take long – just two or three days."

The firm, which is based on the Balmakeith Industrial Estate in Nairn, is one of five firms shortlisted for the inaugural Scottish Baker of the Year title.

Company wide, the new Grantown shop will take the Ashers workforce to 125 staff.

It is run by Mr Asher and his brother George and was established by their great grandfather Alister in 1877.
