Strathspey MP welcomes Land Commission move to Highlands
Badenoch and Strathspey’s MP has welcomed the announcement that the Land Commission will be based in Inverness.
The announcement was made this afternoon (Friday, October 14) by Environment, Climate & Land Reform Secretary, Roseanna Cunningham MSP at the SNP Annual Conference in Glasgow.
The body has been set up as part of the Government’s land reform legislation to review law and policy. The commission will include five land commissioners and will make recommendations to ministers on land reform legislation.
Commenting, Drew Hendry, Westminster representative for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, said: “I am delighted that our Highland capital will be home to the new Land Commission and welcome the news that up to 20 new jobs will be created as a result.
“This announcement further signifies this Government’s commitment to the Highlands & Islands.
“Land Reform legislation will give our communities more local control than ever before and as a Member of Parliament for a largely rural constituency, I think the Land Reform Scotland (Act), coupled with the Community Empowerment legislation, is one of the most significant pieces of legislation to go through our modern and progressive Scottish Parliament.
“It is fantastic to know that the commission, tasked with ensuring that these reforms are rolled out in the spirit that they were agreed, will be based here in Inverness – a perfect base for getting around the Highlands and beyond.”
