The largest hotel in Badenoch and Strathspey has been put up for sale – but rumours that a rival operator is set to take over the Hilton Coylumbridge have been flatly denied.

Calls have been made to ensure that jobs are safeguarded at the 175-bedroom hotel which was given a royal opening by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in December 1965.

The hotel which employs more than 100 staff has been put on the market for £6.5 million.

A spokesperson for current owners Hilton Worldwide said: "We can confirm that Hilton Coylumbridge is currently being marketed for sale. Hilton Worldwide has taken this difficult decision in order to pursue other opportunities that best fit our overall business strategy.

"We remain fully committed to expanding our presence in the UK and over the next few years plan to open 23 hotels across the country, which we anticipate will create over 300 jobs in 2013 alone.

"In the meantime, the hotel remains open for business and will continue welcoming guests."

There had been speculation that Macdonald Hotels and Resorts – operators of the Aviemore resort – was set to acquire the hotel which sits by the Cairngorm ski road two miles outside of the village.

However, a spokesman for Bathgate-based firm told the Strathy: "I can absolutely assure you that we are not acquiring the Hilton Colyumbridge."
