Strath MP calls for Boris Johnson to go
Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey MP Drew Hendry has called Boris Johnson’s position ‘untenable’ after the UK Supreme Court ruled the Prime Minister’s decision to shut down Parliament was unlawful and unconstitutional.
His comments follow the UK Supreme Court’s decision earlier today to uphold the ruling of Scotland’s supreme court.
Mr Hendry (SNP) said: "The UK Supreme Court has followed Scotland’s supreme court and ruled that Boris Johnson's undemocratic decision to shut down Parliament ahead of Brexit was unlawful and unconstitutional.
"Boris Johnson’s cannot be trusted – his position is untenable and he must resign.
“The ruling puts in to sharp focus just how far he is prepared to go, to push through his extreme Brexit – a Brexit we already know will inflict damage on Highland communities.
"The Government’s own reports show that his extreme Brexit plans threaten to plunge the UK into recession.
"Here at home, businesses across the Highlands are already struggling to deal with the impact of Brexit, as are our public services.
"We cannot allow this damage to continue and I will be doing everything I can to ensure the voice of Highland people is heard loud and clear in Parliament.
"This whole sorry mess has underlined just how broken Westminster is.
"Scotland deserves the choice of a better future than the one being imposed upon it.
"It's clearer than ever, that the only way to properly protect Scotland's interests is to become an independent country."
Mr Johnson has said he and his government will respect the decision and the important issue is to get on with delivering Brexit.
MPs are due to return to sit in the House of Commons tomorrow following the ruling that Mr Johnson acted unlawfully when deciding to suspend parliament for five weeks.
