Spaced-Sound Radio! Marathon man Jack completes his 26-hour challenge for Macmillan

"Someone did text me earlier asking 'Is this something you're going to be doing every year?' I think so. Now that we've experienced it I can see other ways of doing this – maybe start at a better time than coming in straight after work!"

So said Speysound Radio DJ Jack Morrison tonight as he put the finishing touches to an astonishing shift which began at 8pm yesterday.

Without a break, he and partner Paula Kosyn, with moral and sometimes physical support from friends both personal and presenters on the station, had kept the show going from their Aberlour home to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Care, which had done such a good job in looking after his grandfather, James, and the family during their crisis.

"A year ago I lost a very special person in my life," Jack had explained. "My Granda was diagnosed with cancer and before he died Macmillan were there for him and for us, supporting him until the end.

"My love of music and radio comes from my Granda – after many evenings sitting with him listening to his many records and favourite shows on local community radio stations.

"I decided to do a radio marathon as it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I feel it is a good way to remember him."

The show included six different sessions, starting with an evening house party yesterday and carrying on through to a breakfast show today and an afternoon with fellow presenters turning into tonight's extended house party.

"Macmillan gives people with cancer everything they’ve got," said the DJ. "If you’re diagnosed, your worries are Macmillan’s worries. Macmillan’s doing whatever it takes.

"But without our help, Macmillan can’t support everyone who needs them. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and secure."

As the show concluded tonight he told the Strathy he would love to have slept for the next two days but both he and Paula had to make sure they were back at work on Monday, she at the Inverness nursery and he at Glenfiddich Distillery.

Jack had soon made his target of £500 and the money continued to come in during the day – as it still is.
