Some breathing space would be appreciated

IT was the year of the Gulf War (Part I), the Poll Tax riots, the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope and probably most famously those Gazza tears at the Italia World Cup.

Yes, 1990 was quite a while ago.

It does seem then that having waited so long that Highland Council has acted with indecent haste to take payments from self-catering operators from the strath and elsewhere in the region.

For many accommodation providers locally, it has been a long and hard winter, not because of the snow but the lack of it.

Highland Council must act fairly when it comes to collecting their fees for refuse collections from self- catering units – most of them small businesses which are struggling in the current economic climate.

After all, they have waited 22 years, what’s another few months, by which time tourism in the strath and Highlands will have picked up.

NO DOUBT everyone connected with Strathspey Thistle was over the moon come 5pm on Saturday to use football parlance.

The first win of the Highland League season has been a long time coming for the Jags – since August last year in fact.

But now "new" boss Brian Ritchie has got that monkey off his back, he and his Thistle players can start looking upwards.

Getting off the foot of the Highland League table where they have been stranded for most of the season will be a huge morale boost.

Saturday’s win was not a fluke as performances by Thistle in recent weeks have been constantly improving.

Fingers crossed for the Jags but it looks like all the the terrific work being done off the pitch is now starting to show on the pitch.

IT’S HEARTENING to hear that Macdonald Hotels and Resorts are now willing to have a member of the SOS Aviemore group attend the forthcoming talks with Aviemore Community Council on the High Life Highland swimming situation at the Aviemore resort pool.

It is a wise decision and hopefully one that will help to resolve this matter and, if not, at least shed light on the exact circumstances behind what is eventually agreed.
