Newtonmore could be stripped of their Sutherland Cup triumph if it is found they fielded an ineligible player in Saturday’s classic Badenoch clash.

The Blue and Whites won the game 5-4 against Kingussie, with Calum Stewart netting twice in the first half for the visitors at the Dell in front of around 700 fans.

However, it is understood Stewart should not have been on the field because he had played too many first team matches to qualify for the game.

Kingussie club officials say they accept this was a genuine oversight but have lodged an official protest to the sport’s governing body.

The Camananchd Association has confirmed it will be holding an investigation and said there was a range of options should Newtonmore be deemed to have fielded an ineligible player.

John Robertson, spokesman for Kingussie Camanachd Club, said: "It is clear that a genuine, honest mistake has occurred.

"The club ended up in an impossible position where we were told that we must lodge a protest by 6pm on Tuesday (July 31), otherwise the matter would not be investigated. We feel this issue could have been easily and quickly dealt with, and should be a matter between the Camanachd Association and Newtonmore Camanachd Club.

"It is up to the association to implement its own rules, and we feel Kingussie should not have to be involved in this.

"However, we have had to react to the deadline and lodged a protest by email at 5.30pm on Tuesday. The intention of protesting is only to allow an investigation to take place.

"Our club has no desire to be given a trophy we didn’t win on the field of play."

The Camanachd Association confirmed it is to investigate.
