Scenic road to one of Badenoch’s most popular attractions to be temporarily closed
One of Badenoch’s most popular stretches of scenic road is to be closed temporarily for daylight hours from tomorrow.
Highland Council has confirmed that from Friday to Sunday there will be a temporary closure of the B970 between Tromie Bridge and Kingussie to allow urgent resurfacing works.
Tourists use the route to access Badenoch’s most significant manmade landmark.
Ruthven Barracks stands on its own hill above the road and draws thousands of visitors during the summer, wanting to capture a few echoes of the Jacobite Rebellion of the early 18th Century.
A spokesperson from the council’s roads department said: “The road will be closed from 7am until 5pm on each day of the closure and will be open as usual outside of these hours.
“Traffic management with signed diversions will be in place.”
Quite how the closure will affect others using the road in their own ways is still unclear.
Walkers, especially, use the route which is an important link for the East Highland Way and Speyside Way from the barracks to the Spey bridge.
Questions are being asked of the roads department about access to walkers, cyclists and even equestrians.
A council spokesperson said: “Walkers will have access to paths adjacent to the B970 as usual.
“However, resurfacing work will be taking place at the three sites indicated on the map at various times over the weekend.
“There will be no safe pedestrian access at these points while the works are being done and the surface is allowed to dry and settle.
“The timings of the works will be dependent on how long each section takes to resurface as well as the weather.
“In light of this, we would advise that walkers observe the road closure and take alternative routes.”
