MACDONALD Hotels and Resorts staff at their three operations in the strath will not be affected by redundancies announced by the company earlier this week.

The hotel giant is expected to lay off in the region of 50 staff at its Bathgate headquarters.

A spokesman for Macdonald Hotels confirmed to the Strathy that the Aviemore resort; Dalfaber Golf and Country Club, also in the village and Lochanhully Resort on the outskirts of Carrbridge are not part of the planned savings.

The company has entered into consultation with staff following a review of its costs. It is understood some staff will be redeployed within the business where possible.

In a letter issued to potentially affected staff, the company stated: "One of the findings from the review was that our operating costs are unsustainably high and we require to focus on reducing these as a priority.

"As a result of these various factors we have been left with no option but to consider implementing a number of redundancies, as part of a wider cost-reduction programme which will also target non-essential overheads and non-staff costs, but regrettably one of the first steps we have been forced to consider is reducing our group headcount by around 50."

Macdonald Hotels also cited "above inflation" rises in their "already significant" business rates, cost increases due to a minimum wage rise, rises in utility costs and pension obligations. Jobs are expected to come from back office staff.
