Demonstrating a high level of care, kindness and compassion to patients on a daily basis is “just one of the reasons” why staff in Raigmore Hospital’s Renal Unit are the latest recipient of an NHS Highland staff award.

The nurses in the unit have been praised for “striving to improve patient care and engage in quality improvement projects.”

They received their award from chairman David Alston for the fact that “patient centred care is always evident and the nurses put a lot of effort into newsletters, remembrance services and patient involvement.”

As a unit it is one of the best in Scotland in terms of access and survival, the staff heard.

“The nomination also highlights what happened in the unit during a particularly busy afternoon where staff had patients going on and coming off dialysis when it soon became apparent to staff in attendance that one of their patients had become acutely unwell.

“The staff immediately stepped up to care for the patient, make them comfortable and arrange an urgent medical review, the family were called and space was made within the unit where they could wait privately and be kept up to date on what was happening with their loved one, all the while ensuring that no other patients were aware of the events unfolding to the extent they may have been distressed.”

What was witnessed was ‘the best care and compassion from a group of nursing staff at all levels who pulled together in a team worthy of the all blacks at Twickenham’.

The team worked together to look after the sickest patient whilst managing to reassure all the other patients around.

The nursing team in the unit are described as a privilege to work with and this is only one of many examples where the team go above and beyond for their patients.

Anne Allan, clinical ward manager, accepted the award on behalf of the team. She said: “We put our patients at the heart of everything we do. Both our nursing and medical teams are fantastic and I’m delighted to accept this on behalf of the whole team.”
