Proposal aims to keep cyclists in Newtonmore for longer stay

Plans have been lodged for a bike storage shelter in the centre of Newtonmore to cater for the increasing number of cyclists visiting the village.

The proposed site is 20 metres north-west of the war memorial on Main Street.

The application has been submitted by Newtonmore Business Association to Highland Council’s planning service based in Kingussie.

The NBA states in the supporting information: “Local accommodations have reported that they have had cycling guests who are undertaking Sustrans Route 7 which goes through Newtonmore.

“Therefore, a reason for a cycle shelter for those attempting different schedules and would appreciate a safe place to leave their bike and have a break.

“Certainly, the media has shown that Active Travel is increasing, and individuals are planning cycling holidays and/or challenges.

“Along with the Cairngorms National Park Authority, we arranged a public consultation in our village hall to present the Centenary Garden Project to local residents.

“Our proposal for the community bike shelter was introduced and the verbal appreciation and realisation of the need was 100 per cent shown.”

The business group said it has been advised that often bikes are locked onto the railings in front of the community village hall when cyclists are shopping, stopping for a coffee or tea or picnicking by the village hall.

Cafe customers have nowhere to leave their bikes due to the narrow pavements.

NBA has partnered with the village’s community council and Newtonmore Community Woodland & Development Trust to take the bike shelter plan forward.

The business group states: “It will be available for all types and ages of cyclist to persuade them to pause for rest and enjoy the centre of the village.

“Our proposal is to contract The Bike Storage Company to instal a cycle shelter with a four hoop Toastrack for secure storage of eight bikes.”
