People should be cautious near frozen waters, say the police

Police are advising the public to be particularly cautious regarding frozen rivers and other water, following an incident in which a dog was rescued after falling through ice.

The incident occurred at the Peedie Sea at Orkney, at about 1pm. Police and Fire services attended to assist with the rescue of a dog which had fallen through the ice.

Police are reminding people of the hazards of frozen waters and that although the ice may look safe it can be unpredictable and very dangerous.

They have said the public should not go onto the ice or allow pets or children onto the ice.

A force spokesman said: "In the event of a person or a pet falling through ice you should not put yourself in danger and contact the emergency services immediately on 999."
