Police appeal for car sighting in strath
POLICE have put out an appeal for sightings of a green colour Mercedes registration S562 LLJ in the local area in connection with suspected frauds.
They believe the car may be being used by culprits who have been trying to con shopkeepers in the strath out of significant amounts of money.
It follows the latest incident in a trick that police describe as ‘Ringing the Changes’ which involves fraudsters attending at shops or banks in possession of a large amount of money, usually in £20 note denominations.
A Northern Constabulary spokesman said: "The persons then ask for the cashier or assistant to change the money into £10 notes, then change their minds and ask for the original bundle of £20 notes back.
"This goes on for a while thereby confusing the staff with the result that the culprints usually leave in possession of a few hundred pounds to the good.
"Fortunately there is a suspect vehicle connected to this which is a Green coloured Mercedes with the registration number S562 LLJ. The occupants of this vehicle are believed to be of Asian origin."
Police have also been contacting banks in the strath to warn them about the scam following the latest incident yesterday (Monday).
