A fundraising concert in memory of a folk music pioneer is to be held in Kingussie next week and will benefit the charity Caberfeidh Horizons based in the town.

'Musical memories of Martyn Bennett' is taking place next Friday (April 21) at Talla nan Ros, starting at 7pm.

Bennett, who died of cancer aged 33 in January 2005, was one of Scotland's most feted young musicians.

He caused a sensation – and much controversy – in British folk music by mixing Scottish bagpipe and fiddle music with techno beats.

Bennett learned the pipes as a schoolboy in Kingussie and was one of Scotland's most prodigiously gifted and beloved of musicians until his untimely death.

Martyn's mother, Margaret, a noted singer, folklorist and author, will be sharing a collection of memories, photographs, film clips and previously unreleased recordings.

It will be a rare chance to hear and see other facets of Bennett's character and musicianship including a Paganini duet played by her son and the inimitable Hester Dickson.

Tickets are available from Caberfeidh Horizons Hub or Bookshop, High Street, Kingussie, and are priced £7.50.
