A spokesperson told the Strathy this afternoon: "Yesterday evening at around 18.50 we received reports of at least 600 tonnes of mud and debris at several areas along a 1.5km section of the A86 east of Roybridge, due to heavy rainfall in area.

"The BEAR team worked with the police to assess the area and close the road to keep drivers safe.

"Due to the volume of debris on the road and movement on the slope above, we had to keep the road closed and put a diversion in place."

A BEAR team began clearing the road first thing this morning and were able to allow local access for the nearby communities quite quickly.

"We are still monitoring the situation and are working hard to open the A86 as soon as possible," the spokesperson added.

"Our aim is to be able to open the A86 under temporary traffic signals by 20:00 hours tonight and to return early tomorrow morning to complete the clear up.

"We will return to complete the removal of the debris, clean up the drainage systems and clear any blocked culverts tomorrow morning."
