Badenoch and Strathspey seniors concerned over 'charity mugging'

The British Red Cross has defended its door-to-door collectors for Ukraine, with concern growing in the strath over chugging – “charity mugging” of lonely old age pensioners through late-evening calls.

Complaints have been raised with the Open Arms Community Support Group.

The group’s administrator Michaela Street told the Strathy: “I have been asked to pass on the fact that they don’t like late calls and being asked for their bank details.

“One, who doesn’t want to be named, told me that they had three calls just after 8.30pm this week and she struggled to get to the door.

“She doesn’t like to answer the door after 6pm and she was already dressed for bed. She was asked to sign up and asked for card details. She refused.

“They were friendly, but it left her feeling uneasy as she wasn’t sure if they were for real and if they would come back again knowing she was elderly and on her own.”

A string of social media posts referred to the practice, not alleging any illegality but all concerned over the effect it was having.

“Whether genuine or not they should not be cold calling, especially in the evening,” said Mrs Street, “and we are trying to raise awareness to everyone never to let anyone into their home or to give any personal details or bank details.

“Several of our seniors have mentioned the Red Cross asking for donations for Ukraine and asking for bank details late in the evening.”

“It will take legislation to stop this from happening,” posted Helen Morris. “It’s so wrong on many levels but I believe totally legal. I complained some years ago to one charity directly about this happening in Aviemore. They weren’t in the slightest bit bothered.”

Neil Stewart contributed: “It will be real. I had the same thing a few years back. What’s new is they’re now doing it at 9pm.”

A British Red Cross spokesperson told the Strathy: “Door-to-door is one method of fundraising which enables us to do the valuable work we do, helping individuals and communities in crisis both here in the UK and across the world.
