Outlook is bright for Carrbridge's very own weather expert

Strathspey’s very own ‘Highland and Islands Weather’ service has a sunny outlook.

And the way the weather is keeping the strath guessing in every glen on every day, it is no surprise that the demand is growing all the time for more and better information.

The Carrbridge-based service, which the Strathy calls on for authoritative and genuinely local meteorological data, is run by weatherman Lee Schofield through his own network of weather stations across the strath and beyond.

He will be putting more local into the weather than ever before.

Mr Schofield announced earlier this week: “Thanks to funds raised through subscriptions I have bought and installed new weather stations in the last 14 days.”

They include lookouts on the top of the Dava Road, north of Grantown, and on Crubenbeg, south of Newtonmore near the A9. Also acquired for the service is a new station at Badaguish Outdoor Centre by Glenmore.

“The latter I donated to Alzheimers Scotland,” said Mr Schofield, “who were looking to instal one there.”

And this coming weekend the network is expanding with more new stations being installed. They will be at Boblainy near Kiltarlity, funded by Highland Premier Glamping Pods; Loch Glascarnoch Dam; Corriemoillie and Marybank.

Also envisaged are devices at Loch Ericht, Stoer, Scouriemore, Kishorn and Sworedale.

Mr Schofield said: “Clearly I don’t have endless funding to put them in every town or village but when you consider how few official recording sites the Met Office my network is huge in comparison, close on 100 sites.

“I am trying to get the Highlands, Moray, Aberdeenshire, Highland Perthshire and the Isles well covered. The network is now around 100 strong.

“If anyone wishes to donate, buy their own station or join the subscription page for more weather forecasts they can get in touch via Facebook.”
