NHS Highland chiefs have, for the first time, confirmed that Aviemore should be home to plans for a brand new £12 million hospital serving Badenoch and Strathspey.

As already revealed, the area’s two hospitals – St Vincent’s in Kingussie and Ian Charles Hospital in Grantown – would be closed as part of the major overhaul.

Until now the development group leading the project for the single new community hospital have just said the facility would be in a ‘central location’ in the strath.

However, the 177-page report to go before a special meeting of NHS Highland next Tuesday (March 4) in Inverness reveals that the location for the hospital is Aviemore.

The plans will need to be approved by the board to progress. The project would require the green light and funding from the Scottish Government.

The new hospital would provide a full range of hospital services, including inpatient beds, out-of-hours, accident and emergency and outpatient clinics.

Once the new services are in place then St Vincent’s and Ian Charles would close.

Health bosses have described the plan as a "challenging but exciting modernisation programme which would impact on communities positively for many decades to come".
