Britain’s biggest national park is gearing up to celebrateNational Parks Week.

The event kicks off on Monday (July 28) and “where better to celebrate than the Cairngorms?”

A Cairngorms National Park Authority spokesperson said: “At 1,748 square miles (4,528 square kilometres) and with 13 ranger services, there is something for everyone here.”

During the week, there will be a wide range of organised events courtesy of the park’s ranger services.

“It’s a great chance to get out and explore this very special place and make memories that will last a lifetime.”

Among the events happening are:

  • Caledonian Pine Woodland Celebration Walk with the rangers at Balmoral Estate
  • Moths in the Morning at the Muir of Dinnet Nature Reserve with Aberdeen Council’s Ranger Service
  • Squirrel Scampers at Blair Atholl with the Atholl Estates Ranger Service
  • And on the very last day there is the Cairngorms Futurescape Treefest, a family fun day organised by the RSPB at the Abernethy National Nature Reserve.

The event is an annual celebration of the amazing places, people, and things to be found within the boundaries of the 15 members of the UK’s national parks family.

It runs until the Sunday August 3.

Pete Crane, the Cairngorms National Park Authority’s (CNPA) Head of Visitor Services said: “National parks are very important assets. They not only offer some of the most beautiful and dramatic landscapes in the country but they are also home to important habitats and wildlife so it’s great to celebrate national parks in this way.

“The Cairngorms National Park is particularly special in that it is the best place to see some of the UK’s rarest species and the concentration of activities is immense – from walking, watersports and wildlife watching to castles, culture and cycling.

"I would encourage everyone to join in and to discover why the Cairngorms National Park isn’t just the biggest, but the best!”

The event can be celebrated personally or with a ranger.
