The public is being warned that part of the popular Newtonmore Wildcat Trail is currently out of bounds after being hit by a landslip.

The community trust which looks after the orbital footpath said the short section had sustained serious damage in the recent bad weather.

It meant they had no option but to shut the Allt Laraidh section until repairs can be carried out. No date has yet been given for the works.

Newtonmore Commun-ity Woodland and Development Trust is responsible for maintaining the trail and took the decision following discussions with the landowner.

Paul Woolrich, NCWDT chairman, said: “This section of the path is now too dangerous for walkers and we encourage folk to take the alternative route via Strone Road.

“We are investigating options for repairing the path but this is going to take some time.”

A detour has been put in place so that people can continue to use the rest of the orbital footpath.

Trust secretary Paul Allan said: “The landslip happened last week but this particular spot has been troublesome for a while. There was a small landslip last year which the trust managed to repair.

“We knew that the path needed some more work on it in this area and have had the problem professionally assessed.

“However, this latest landslip has accelerated the need for the repairs to the point where the path has had to be closed.

“The trust will have to get funding to do this work once the damage has been reassessed.”

Information has been posted on the detour at both the wildcat centre in the village and by the Allt Laraidh.
