Newtonmore woman has been a vital link in charity's fundraising 'Cheyne'
One of the strath’s ‘most generous and loveliest fundraisers’ has hung up her collection bucket after bringing in more than £60,000 for a charity close to her heart.
Sandra Cheyne, of Newtonmore, has decided to retire from her role as a Marie Curie volunteer after nearly 20 years of sterling service.
Sandra, who herself was a Marie Curie nurse for the final five years of her 30-year nursing working life, is a extremely well-kent face in the community.
She is probably best-known for starting and running the annual May’s Walk round the village’s orbital wildcat trail which began in 2009 in memory of her dear friend May Mackenzie.
Vonnie Stevenson, Marie Curie’s community fundraiser for the Highlands, said: “Sandra is nothing less than a legend in the area, making sure that everyone knew what Marie Curie does and how to get the care and support we offer, as well as raising considerable funds over many years.
“Sandra was, of course, a Marie Curie nurse but for the last two decades she and partner Rennie have been the face of the charity in the Newtonmore and Kingussie area.
“We will sorely miss them both and wish them good health and happiness with future plans.”
Sandra became involved initially after her friend May was cared for by Marie Curie and she really saw the value and importance in supporting the charity through fundraising.
Following May’s passing, she quickly organised the Newtonmore Field Hope which is still blooming to this day.
Her other fundraisers included a mile of coins linking Newtonmore to Kingussie, T on the Terrace, and more conventional collections in-store at the local Co-ops in the two communities and shinty match collections.
Vonnie said that May’s Walk has been a stunning success: “This event has raised tens of thousands of pounds over the last 12 years and is a great day to bring the community together and remember a loved one whilst supporting Marie Curie locally.”
