Public conveniences in Newtonmore are expected to remain out of bounds for the rest of the summer after being targeted by vandals.

Highland Council locked up the village centre toilets on July 10.

The window of the gent’s facilities had been smashed and attempts made to cause flooding on the premises by choking the sinks

A Highland Council spokeswoman said: “A timeline for the Newtonmore toilets to re-open has not been determined, and they are likely to remain closed for the duration of the summer.”

There have been a number of similar incidents at other public cconveniences across the region which places a strain on already stretched finances.

A local authority spokesperson said at the time of the incident: “Regrettably the council has had to make a decision to close the Newtonmore toilets with immediate effect while we assess the next steps for the site.

“Those responsible are asked to think hard about the consequences of their actions not only for visitors and members of the public but crucially for disabled people or elderly people who may need these facilities in an emergency.”

Public toilets in Carrbridge and Kingussie have both been closed recently after also suffering vandalism.

They are now back in use.
