Newtonmore shinty club hits out at vandal's "idiocy"

Newtonmore Camanachd Club chiefs have said they are "incandescent with rage" at the "irresponsible idiocy" of a dog walker using their famous Eilan ground.

They say the culprit has twice taken wire cutters to fencing at the ground so that they can access the area to walk their pet.

A supporter of the club has put up a £50 reward for information leading to the identification of the individual.

Club secretary Ian Gibson said “Like Kingussie Camanachd, the club welcomes dog walkers to our ground and we have had very few problems with owners not picking up any dog mess.

"But we have a new type of anti-social behaviour and if we catch the culprit we will be reporting him or her to the police for criminal damage.”

Club president Norman Macarthur explained: “Last week some lambs from the neighbouring field got onto our new pitch and we discovered that someone had taken wire cutters at a stile to allow a dog over.

"After we sorted that it happened again at the far side of the field and this time the wire had been cut from the farmer's field into the Eilan with the wire pushed in so that a dog could get through.

"What sort of person carries wire cutters around when they are walking their dog and leaves holes so that sheep and lambs can escape?

"Frankly it beggars belief.”
