Local motorists targeted in police's seat belt crackdown
North police are cracking down on those who don't wear seat belts.
POLICE will be targeting motorists ignoring speed limits and those not wearing seat belts as part of a day of action being staged across the North this week.
Northern Constabulary officers will tomorrow (Wednesday) be getting tough on those who are risking lives by speeding and/or not wearing seat belts.
The initiative is part of the force’s ongoing commitment to the improvement of road safety, and comes just a fortnight after the ACPOS-led country roads campaign at Easter which detected a worrying high number of people speeding.
Head of road policing, Inspector John Smith said: "I was disappointed to see the high number of people speeding in the recent weekend of action and hope that this will not be the case on Wednesday.
"Despite the number of road traffic collisions that happen daily across the UK, the recent enforcement campaign highlighted that drivers are still not listening to the warnings we issue.
"There is no reason for someone within a vehicle not to wear a seat belt – it is one of the most advanced safety items within a vehicle and has proven, again and again, it can make the difference of life and death in a collision."
He added: "I would like to point out that the detection of people driving in an unsafe manner will extend all year road, not just for one day, as we endeavour to deter people from driving in an unsafe manner and detect those who do."
