Police clampdown on speeders

By SPP Reporter

OFFICERS in Northern Constabulary will be targeting drivers ignoring speed limits and those not wearing seatbelts as part of the ACPOS day of action across the Highlands and Islands this week.

On Wednesday (11 May 2011) officers from across the Highlands and Islands will be targeting those drivers who are risking their own and others lives by speeding and/or not wearing seatbelts.

The day of action is part of the Force's ongoing commitment to the improvement of safety on Highlands and Islands roads, and comes just a fortnight after the ACPOS Country Roads campaign at Easter detected a worrying high number of people speeding.

Head of Road Policing, Inspector John Smith spoke ahead of the enforcement day: "I was disappointed to see the high number of people speeding in the recent weekend of action and hope that this will not be the case on Wednesday.

"Despite the number of road traffic collisions that happen daily across the UK, the recent enforcement campaign highlighted that drivers are still not listening to the warnings we issue.

"There is no reason for someone within a vehicle not to wear a seatbelt, it is one of the most advanced safety items within a vehicle and has proven again and again, can make the difference of life and death, in a collision."

Inspector Smith went on to speak of Northern Constabulary's ongoing commitment to road safety: "I would like to point out that the detection of people driving in an unsafe manner will extend all year road, not just for one day, as we endeavour to deter people from driving in an unsafe manner and detect those who do."
