But Rothes' cup adventure ended with a 1-0 defeat at home to League 2 Annan.

First half goals by Greg Morrison and Darryl McHardy helped City defeat their Lowland League opponents, who finished with ten men after a plucky display.

Elgin assistant boss Keith Gibson said he and manager Gavin Price were not happy with their team's second half display but was pleased to go through to round three.

There they will play the Stirling uni side who won 2-1 at Deveronvale, having defeated another Highland League side in Keith in the first round.

Rothes battled well against Annan but David Wilson's second half goal saw the Borders team through.

Brora beat Coldstream 6-0 to book a trip to Cowdenbeath in the next round while Fraserburgh's 2-0 win at Edusport Academy means they could play Cove Rangers, who drew with Aichinleck Talbot.

Formartine United are also through after a fine 2-0 win at Albion Rovers.

In the Highland League Forres Mechanics hit top form with a 7-2 thrashing of Buckie Thistle, Andy Macrae and Robbie Duncanson both grabbing hat-tricks.

And Keith ended a run of five games without a win, coming from behind to beat Nairn County 2-1.
