Six-year-old cancer survivor Ben Gordon has launched a fundraiser at Harry Gow's bakery in Smithton.

Ben, from Inshes, Inverness, sampled the first fairy cakes made to raise cash for children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent.

During May the bakers will be selling the cakes in all of its 16 outlets with half the proceeds being donated to the charity.

Ben was diagnosed with a tumour in his chest in June 2009 and underwent chemotherapy in Aberdeen’s Royal Children’s Hospital. He spent three months in hospital with his mother Alison by his side.

She had to give up her work at Scottish Water but her husband Dougie, who works in the same office, was able to temporarily relocate to Aberdeen. Ben’s brother, 14 month old Kyle was cared for by his grandparents in Inverness.

Throughout Ben’s ordeal, help came from CLIC Sargent. A nurse and social worker in Aberdeen provide much needed support.

"Ben is doing fine now but we still have to go into the children’s oncology clinic at Raigmore regularly for check ups and ongoing treatment and we see Evelyn the social worker and Fiona in the CLIC Sargent funded post," said Mrs Gordon.

Peter Logie, the charity's community fundraising manager for Highlands & Islands and Moray said such a sudden diagnosis can turn a family’s world upside down but CLIC Sargent was there to help.

"I would encourage folk to make this a record breaking month for CLIC Sargent and buy the cakes in great numbers to help us support children like Ben in the Highlands who face a frightening and uncertain future," he said.
