Nairn turn on the style at Huntly
NAIRN County’s impressive form continued on Wednesday night when they romped to a 4-2 Highland League victory at Huntly.
This is just the kind of form manager Les Fridge was looking for as the Fosters Cup Final against Fraserburgh on May 14 looms.
They will now go into Saturday’s game against Strathspey Thistle looking for another win – and a few goals – to bolster the confidence further ahead of the big day in Banff.
It took just four minutes for Nairn to edge in front. Gregg Main whipped in a cross and Craig Campbell pounced from close range to beat goalkeeper Neil Hastie.
Campbell was given the chance to add to the opener seven minutes later when Dale Gillespie was brought down in the box for a penalty. Nairn’s top scorer’s spot-kick was saved by Hastie and hit follow-up shot crashed off the post.
Nairn continued to control the game and, on 27 minutes, Gillespie made it 2-0 with a fine driving run and shot from 20 yards.
Huntly midfielder Stuart Soane then tested keeper Calum Donaldson as Huntly looked to find a way back.
The hosts also started well in the second half, but Nairn added a third goal on the hour mark when sub Tony Low remained cool in the box to bury a shot into the net after getting on the end of a Campbell cross.
Ten minutes later, Campbell headed his side 4-0 ahead to take his tally to a cracking 33 goals for the campaign.
Huntly then finally got on to the scoresheet when Mike McGinlay netted from the spot after Ross Campbell had been tripped in the penalty box.
Black and Golds defender Campbell then gave the Christie Park team a glimmer of hope when he cashed in on a spilled cross from Donaldson to steer the ball into the net.
Huntly piled on the pressure and, with five minutes to go, Stephen Gauld thought he’s pegged it back to 4-3, but his effort was flagged for offside and Nairn held on for the victory.
In the only other midweek fixture, Wick Academy earned a 3-2 victory at Brora Rangers.
