Cycle trip may inspire annual event
A CITY-to-city cycle challenge undertaken last weekend by two friends to benefit an historic Wester Ross church could set the wheels in motion for an annual fund-raiser much closer to home.
Celia Charity and Sara Callaghan covered the 45 miles between Glasgow and Edinburgh on Sunday in 4.5 hours in support of their Lochbroom community’s efforts to turn Clachan Church into a local hub.
Peter Newling, an interim trustee of the Clachan Lochbroom Heritage Trust, said: ""The ride doesn’t sound easy. I hadn’t realised how hilly it is between Glasgow and Edinburgh! I admire Sara and Celia’s effort hugely.
"The trust needs every penny that it can get and it is extra special when funds come spontaneously from the efforts of supporters of our project. It shows what a place Clachan has in the hearts of Lochbroom folk – they realise what an asset it is already, and what it can become given some tender loving care."
The church was saved from an uncertain future by the local community when it was put up for sale.
Another neighbour, Sarah Mackenzie, who has also been involved in the hub effort, said: "The scenery and terrain around Clachan is ideal. There’s forestry trails on Clachan’s doorstep, cross-country routes, and tremendously scenic roads within the parish such as Coigach to Clachan, passing below Stac Pollaidh, and Mungasdale to Clachan which goes past the foot of An Teallach. I can see it now."
Donations meanwhile can be made via a donate button on the website www.clht.org.uk and at The New Broom hub in Ullapool.
